Patrick J. Costello, 77, of Hager City, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at his home. He was born November 1, 1937, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Frank and Anne (Moening) Costello. He graduated in 1955 from Sauk Centre High School and then enlisted in the US Coast Guard, serving from 1955-1959. In 1964 he graduated from San Jose State College in San Jose, California. While in San Jose he worked as a patrolman for the San Jose Police Department from 1961 to 1963 and the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control from 1963-1965. He returned to Minnesota where he worked for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in St. Paul from 1965-1969 as a criminal investigator. In June 1969 he graduated from the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. From 1970-1971, he worked for the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. before returning to Minnesota, where practiced law from 1971 up until his death, serving as the City Attorney in Red Wing from 1973 - 1986. During this time he also worked for the Department of Justice as a consultant and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in Minnesota as an Adjunct Instructor. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph. In his free time, he enjoyed sailing, handball, hunting, and traveling with friends and family throughout Ireland and the Caribbean. He also was an avid reader, great cook and enjoyed spending time with loved ones.
He is survived by Roxanne O'Connor of Red Wing; three sons, Tim (Sally) of San Diego, Sean (Lourdes) of Dunbarton, New Hampshire and Patrick (Kristin) of San Diego; six grandchildren, Jack, Ryan, Charlie, Thomas, Sandra and Abigail; three siblings, Kaye (Jerry) Beuning of Sauk Centre, Diane (Robert) Latterell of Cold Spring and Michael Costello of Sauk Centre and nieces and nephews, Todd, Tera, Steven and Brian. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anne, former wife, Mary, and most recently life-long friend, Donovan Pederson.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
