William O. Swanson

William Owen Swanson, age 84, of Red Wing, died Sunday October 17, 2010 at his residence. He was born January 17, 1926 in Welch, MN to Clarence and Doris Swanson. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1944. He married Shirley Johnson on October 21, 1944 in Durham, NC. He then enlisted in the United States Army serving in Germany during World War II. William was honorably discharged in 1947. After returning from the war he worked for the Minnesota State Highway Department, University of Minnesota in the research department, the Red Wing Police Department, and later for the Goodhue County Sheriff Department where he was the Chief Deputy Sheriff, retiring in 1981. He enjoyed going to his cabin on White Ash Lake enjoying many days fishing with Shirley. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the American Legion Leo C. Peterson Post #54, and Elks Lodge #845.

He is survived by his children, Dianna (Duffy) Schafer and Dale (Patty) Swanson both of Red Wing; grandchildren, Troy Schafer, Tony Swanson, Mike Hoffman, Shawn Hoffman, Angie Hoffman, Kassie Marking, Heidi McCoy, and Cole Swanson; 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Swanson and special friend, Jane Wettern.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Troy Schafer, Tony Swanson, Mike Hoffman, Shawn Hoffman, Ryan Marking and Bryan McCoy and Cole Swanson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Milton Olson, Paul Bjorkland, and Tim Wettern. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Fairview Red Wing Hospice or St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
