William Mathew Smith, 84, of Red Wing died Saturday, December 2, 2006 at this home. He was born in Elmira, New York on June 16, 1922, to Raymond and Mildred (Pease) Smith. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy and during World War II he was in the Government Service. He married Mary Ann Curry on August 4, 1950 in Litchfield, Minnesota. They lived in New Jersey and he worked for Stangl Pottery. They moved to Red Wing where he was employed by Red Wing Pottery and then at Central Research. Mary Ann died on September 28, 2006. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star and the Masons. He also volunteered at Fairview Red Wing Hospital. He enjoyed golfing, camping, sailing and being with people. He was a devout Christian and was active in his church. Survivors include one sister, Phyllis Sherman of Leesburg, Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister, Dorothy Merrill. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2006 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Gary Elg officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cedar Mills, Minnesota. Funeral arrangements by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
