William "Bill" C. Ness

July 18, 1924 — November 16, 2016

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016, at a 10:00 AM service at United Lutheran Church, for William Charles "Bill" Ness, 92, of Red Wing, who died Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Hillview Health Care Center in LaCrosse, WI, surrounded by family. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Robert (Elaine) Ness of Lafayette, LA, James Ness of Los Angeles, CA, Mary (Earl) Ness of LaCrescent, Margaret Sutherland of Red Wing & Charlene (Jerrold) Miraglia of Orchard Park NY, his 9 grandchildren, 9 great- grandchildren, & many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his devoted & loving wife of 65 years, Jean Lois (Bennett) Ness, parents, Harold S. & Myrtle (Aldrich) Ness, brother, Robert & sister, Harriet (Ness) Forsberg.

A graduate of Red Wing High School, Bill also served honorably with many medals in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. He attended Bemidji State College on a basketball scholarship. For over fifty years, Bill grew his various businesses (Ness Hotel, Minnesota Gifts, etc.) alongside with his wife Jean, until their retirement. He also helped build the Red Wing Pottery to prominence as Sales, Marketing & Warehouse Mgr. Bill loved pretty Red Wing and cared about its development. He contributed to the expansion of Red Wing Country Club from 9 to 18 holes, and was actively involved in the projects of building the second boat harbor and making room for Bay Point Park. He developed the site on which Perkins & Best Western Motel are located. Bill was an accomplished athlete in all sports throughout his life. He was prolific in winning numerous Club Golf Championships and tournaments.

Active in his faith, Bill was a member of United Lutheran Church his entire life. For many years Bill served Meals on Wheels, served on the boards of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Elks, and was a member of the Red Wing City Council. He was always helping the elderly. In addition to their children & grandchildren, Bill and Jean truly enjoyed traveling, extending their hospitality, and close friendships for over half of century.

The Ness family would like to give special thanks to those loving and giving individuals at the hospice and care centers that took care of Bill his last months of life.
