William F. Gunnels JR.
William F. Gunnels JR Age 96 of Lake City formerly of Hendersonville, NC passed away Friday Jan 18 2019 at The Bluffs of Lake City.
William was born September 16, 1922 in Johnstown SC to W (Fred) & Jessie (Mason) Gunnels. William joined the Army in 1942 serving in the 54th Signal Battalion,WWII stationed in Europe. He ws discharged in 1945. Graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for GE for 39 years traveling extensively as he set up infrastructures for Energy Plants.
He married his wife Nena Crenshaw on December 19 1958 in Tupelo Mississippi. They welcomed their only son William III (Bill) on August 22, 1960. They enjoyed many travels together. Taking a month long trip to Europe in 1979 to trace the steps William JR took during WWII. William also was very active with the Honor Flight and helped with many reunions and events.
William is survived by his son William Gunnels III of Lake City and nieces Anne Lattimore of Aiken SC and Jennifer Lattimore of Lawrence KS.
He ws preceded in death by his wife Nena Gunnels, sister Betty Lattimore and his parents W Fred Gunnels and Jessie Gunnels, Nephew Jeff Lattimore.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Lake City Care Center Chapel Thursday January 24 at 1:00 with Rev Duane Holst officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:00at the Lake City Care Center Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Hendersonville North Carolina.
