William Clarence Gauger, 88 of Red Wing, died Monday, April 21, 2014 at the Seminary Home in Red Wing. He was born March 22, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, son of Clarence and Lizetta (Gosse) Gauger. He attended his schooling in Winona. In 1943, he entered the US Navy, serving during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. On December 11, 1948, William married Eleanor Stansfield in Winona. The couple made their home in Minneapolis until moving to Washington state in 1952. In 1971, the couple moved to Red Wing, where William worked for NSP until retiring in 1991. Eleanor died on March 15, 2011. William was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post # 54 and the Red Wing Elks Club #845. He enjoyed traveling, especially wintering in Texas. He also liked to go camping, fishing and hunting.
William is survived by his three children, Donna Steffenhagen of Red Wing, Pat (Terry) Reglin of Ellsworth, WI, and Dave (Nan) Gauger of Miesville; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; foreign exchange student from Japan, Yoshihisa Ohashi and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Barbie; one son, Bob; one grandson, Ben Gauger; and two brothers, Donald and Lewis.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Red Wing Mayo Clinic Hospice.
