Wilbur George Emery

Wilbur George Emery, 98, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his home at Deer Crest. He was born on September 14, 1918 in Ironton, Minnesota to Elmer and Lillian (Markwardt) Emery. He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1936 and then worked various jobs in the Brainerd area. From 1942-1945 he served in the US Army during World War II. On July 3, 1945 he was united in marriage to Lillian Flaskerud in Brainerd. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis from 1945 to 1948 earning a diploma in Mechanical Drafting. Later he earned an Associate's degree at the University of Minnesota in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed as a draftsman and machine designer for 37 years, retiring from Continental Machines in Savage. He and Lillian resided in Mankato, St, Louis Park and Burnsville before moving to Red Wing in 1984. In Red Wing he worked with his son Cliff, at the Red Carpet Inn and Super 8 Motel for 13 years and then at Industrial Hardwoods retiring again at age 85. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the VFW and a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed music, crossword puzzles, dancing, but most of all spending time with his family.

Survivors include his two sons, Cliff (Kathy) Emery of Red Wing and Bill Emery of Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Kristin (Pat) Lynner, Danielle (Joe) Rice, Lisa (Lyle) Gill, Chad (Ivy) Emery, Trent Johnson, Brook (Brendan) O'Rourke, Tait (Sarah) Johnson, David Emery and Christina Emery and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; two brothers, Myland and Leonard Emery and one sister, Lillian Martin.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Legion prayer service at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. The funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristin Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will follow the funeral at 12:45 p.m. at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery Assembly Area #4. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or The USO (United Service Organization), PO Box 96860, Washington D.C. 20007-7677.
