Wilbert Gerhard Matthees, 100, of Red Wing, died on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at Benedictine Living Community. He was born on July 14, 1920, in Goodhue, to Johannes and Anna (Rehder) Matthees. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, in rural Goodhue. He was baptized on August 8, 1920 by Reverend G. Hinnenthal, attended parochial school there through the 8th grade, and was confirmed in the Christian faith on May 20, 1934 by Reverend F.W. Weindorf. He was an active member of the church and volunteered when and wherever he could be of help. He spent most of his life farming with his father, brothers, Milton and Gordon, and sister, Doris. In 1987, he moved to Goodhue with Milton and Doris after selling the farm to his nephew. In 2008, he and Doris moved to the Villa at Hi Park, when she needed more care. Wilbert was a kind and quiet man who loved his family and spent many hours with his nieces, nephews, and their families. He was a devoted caregiver to Doris for many years.
Wilbert is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, and their families, and by his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Milton; sisters, Elda Augustine, Gertrude Stemmann, Bernice Voth, and Doris Matthees; and nieces, Jean Augustine, Linda Betcher, and Sandra Sandberg.
