Werner Schneider

Werner Paul Albert Schneider, 87, Red Wing, died Sunday at Fairview Seminary Home. He was born July 17, 1921 in the free state of Danzig, the son of Gustav and Dorothea (Merkins) Schneider. He graduated from the free state of Danzig and served in the German Navy during WW II. He married Johanna Schneider on March 25, 1944 in Danzig and they later moved to Siegen, West Germany where he worked at the tannery. They came to America in 1956, first living in Tenstrike, Minn., then moved to Red Wing on Dec. 24, 1960. He worked at S. B. Foot Leather Tannery for 22 years, retiring with the title of Chief Engineer. He then worked for the City of Red Wing and assisted with starting the Red Wing Incinerator. He also fired the boiler for Dick Tittle with the boat factory. Johanna died May 23, 1976. He married Margarete Lubach in 1978. She died August 1, 2007. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed being out on the river, reading and building model ships and airplanes.

Survivors include four children, Jochen (Julie) Schneider of Red Wing, Jutta (Ernest) Hopkins of Bismarck, ND, Hannelore Bauer (LoLo) of Maiden Rock and Nancy (Jeff) Johnson of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren, Forrest, Lucy, Allen, Peter and Johanna; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Remington, Natalie, Abby and Eli. He was preceded in death by his wives and one brother, Dieter Schneider.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Gary Elg officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
