Wayne Safe

July 24, 1936 — February 25, 2020

Wayne "Whitey" Norman Safe, 83, of Red Wing, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at St. Crispin Living Community - The Villa. He was born in Red Wing on July 24, 1936, to Glen and Elsie (Nash) Safe. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1955. In high school he worked for Sunbeam Bread, Olson Paint Store and Allyn's Bakery. After high school he worked for Harry Munson Construction for 6 years and served in the United States Army National Guard for 12 years. On March 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Barbara Cadwell in Hastings. For 14 years he worked for Paul Lawrence Construction before owning and operating Whitey's Construction. For 25 years he built and remodeled homes and several businesses in the Red Wing area. Following his retirement in 2000, he drove cars for Red Wing Chevrolet until recently. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a dedicated, devoted and instrumental member of the Pharm Committee at church. He was also a member of the Red Wing Elks Club BPOE #845 and the Red Wing Golf Club. He enjoyed hockey, which included coaching youth hockey, camping, fishing, and having coffee with his coffee buddies. He was a bat boy for the RW Aces. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed spending time with them, helping them with projects around their homes and attending their sporting events.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; two children, Scott (Julie) Safe of Red Wing and Julie (Jerry) Eckstrom of Welch; four grandchildren, Nate (Kate) Safe and Jordan (Beth Binger) Safe all of Red Wing, John (Kim) Eckstrom of Tucson, AZ, and Annie (Bryson Daggett) Parker of Arlington, WA and five great-grandchildren; Kayden, Fitz, and Juliette Safe, Finley Parker, and Alexandra Eckstrom. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Willis, Robert, and Richard Safe.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Dana Jackson officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at church. Burial will be at a later date at Burnside Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
