Obituary Notice
Walter E. Smith Jr.

Walter Ellis Smith Jr., 89, of Red Wing, died Monday at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park. He was born September 29, 1918 to Walter and Mathilda (Haga) Smith; he graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1937. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and served until being honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. On September 10, 1949 he married Ruth Bredehoft at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. He worked at Red Owl and Sundberg's groceries before joining the Red Wing Fire Department where he worked for 28 years until his retirement. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he volunteered and served on its council. He enjoyed photography, carpentry, and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two children, Suzanne(Don) Katra of Faribault and Kevin (Trisha) Smith of Red Wing; five grandchildren; one sister, DeLoris (Bob) Tubbesing and sister-in-law, JoAnna Smith of Red Wing; sister-in-law, Irene Myers of Watertown, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Smith and sister, Lois Smith.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church with Reverend Todd Engel Officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jake and Katie Morlock, Kristy Katra, Trenton Smith, Randy Walker, and Kyle Koltz. Honorary Pallbearers will be Travis and Marissa Smith. Visitation will be for one hour prior at the church. Memorials are preferred to the St. John's Lutheran Church or St. John's Lutheran Church School. Arrangements are being handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
