Walter Schultz, age 86, of Rochester, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester. Walter Allen Schultz was born Feb. 6, 1931 in Hammond, MN to Frank and Pearl (Fetzer) Schultz. He was raised in the Hammond area and attended Rochester Schools. He worked as a truck driver for Reiland Trucking before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Walter served from 1952 to 1954, including one year in Korea during the Korean War. After his discharge he moved to Mazeppa and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Rochester Sand and Gravel for twenty years, retiring due to disability. On Nov. 14, 1959 he married Irene Hofschulte at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mazeppa, she survives. He did light farming at his hobby farm near Mazeppa before the couple moved to Rochester in 2010. He was a member of Pax Christi Catholic Church, the Mazeppa American Legion Post, and the Korean War Veterans Club of Rochester. Walter enjoyed playing cards, visiting, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Irene, his daughter Deb (John Kisro) Schultz of Rochester; sons David (Michele) of Byron, MN; and Dale (Kathy) of Clear Lake, IA; grandchildren Devin, Connor, and Sophia Schultz, and Haylee (Josh) Wood; step-grandchildren Nathan West, Ashley (Adam) Trautman, Aaron (Kate) Rush, Jordan Rush, and Kayla (Bruce) McClaflin; and his sister Evelyn (Chuck) Wick of Oronoco, MN. He was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
The Memorial Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Pax Christi Catholic Church with Father Will Thompson officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service on Saturday at the church and a reception will be held following the service. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Cemetery in Mazeppa. Military Honors will be provided by the Mazeppa Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
