Walter “Walt” August Herman Scheffler

June 13, 1919 — September 25, 2013

Walter "Walt" August Herman Scheffler, age 94, of Mazeppa, died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born on June 13, 1919, in Pine Island Township, Goodhue County, to Herman and Elsie (Radtke) Scheffler. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade. Walter worked on the family farm in the Pine Island Township area. He enjoyed dancing and met his future bride, Lorraine Krinke, at a dance, and they married on September 15, 1943, her parents' 23rd wedding anniversary, at St. Peter's Poplar Grove Lutheran Church in Pine Island Township. They made their home on a farm nearby where they raised three children. Walt was a township officer, church officer, member of two cemetery boards in Poplar Grove Cemetery and Mazeppa Cemetery. Upon retiring from farming in 1981, Walt and Lorraine moved to Mazeppa. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa. Walt was active in church activities, Meals on Wheel, and Senior Citizens in Mazeppa. His favorite hobbies included deer hunting and fishing, and getting together with friends and family.

Walter is survived by his daughter, Wendy (Clinton) Sparks; son, Wayne (Denise) Scheffler; grandchildren, Shannon (John) Davies, Shawn (Denel) Sparks, Sheila (Andy) Thoma, Elizabeth Scheffler, Emily (Jeremy) Pierce; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Connor, Cameron, Garin, August, Clara, Keegan, Adrik, Kaleb, Ryan, Ally; sister-in-law, Betty Scheffler; many nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine who died on January 11, 2011; daughter, Jeanne Scheffler; great-granddaughter, Kiley Sparks; brothers, Leonard, Reuben, Raymond; sisters, Lorraine Ondler, and Elaine Hofstad.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 28, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazeppa with Pastor Alan Horn officiating. Burial will be in the Mazeppa Cemetery.
