Walter Melvin Qualle, 76, of Red Wing, died March 18th, 2013 at St. Brigid's Hi-Park. He was born September 14th, 1936 in Dennison, MN to Lewis and Amanda (Strombach) Qualle. He attended Cannon Falls High School and worked for several farms in the area before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1955 where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1959. He married LeannNelle Welt on July 1, 1958 at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing. The couple made their home in Red Wing. Walter worked at Red Wing Shoe and Red Wing Iron Works before working at Swanson Plumbing and Heating in Hastings where he worked for 31 years. Walter was a member of the American Legion Leo C. Peterson, post 54, Sheet Metal Workers Local #10 and the Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, WI. He enjoyed camping and fishing at Spencer Lake in Siren, WI where he and his family went for 41 years. Aside from fishing he also enjoyed gardening (particularly tomatoes) and rock polishing.
Walter is survived by his wife, LeannNelle of Red Wing; two children, Donna (Jay) Chytracek of Cannon Falls and Jay (Donna Carlson) Qualle of Belvidere; four grandsons, Ryan and Travis Qualle and Carson and Tyler Chytracek; sister, Cindy (Marland) Husaby of Cannon Falls; brothers, Russell (Arlene) and Virgil (Darlene) Qualle of Cannon Falls as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clifford, Joe, Edward, Leslie and Henry; and three sisters, Lil Wohfeil, Gertude McKinley and Agnes Lawson.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Tuesday, March 26 at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Rev. Brian Scott and Debby Bradley officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church.
