Funeral services for Wallace C. Huebner will be 1:00 PM on Friday August 20, 2010 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Goodhue, with the Rev. Randall Kuznicki officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Goodhue. Mr. Huebner 94, of Goodhue died Monday, August 16, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Wallace Claus Huebner was born to William and Clara (Muhlmann) Huebner on March 10, 1916, in Hay Creek. He attended Immanuel Lutheran parochial school and Red Wing high school. Together with his father, they farmed in Hay Creek until he joined the U.S. Marine Corp on March 24, 1942 in Minneapolis. After basic training in San Diego where he joined the 3rd Defense Battalion, they were sent to Hawaii for six weeks. From there, they were sent to Tulagi, arriving August 7, 1942. Three weeks later they arrived on Guadalcanal, where Mr. Huebner remained until February 9, 1943. He earned three major battle stars, and his battalion was awarded a Presidential citation for those three battles. From Guadalcanal, his battalion was sent to New Zealand where they remained until November 1943; from there they were sent to Bougainville where his battalion won another major battle star. He returned to San Diego in September 1944 and spent 12 months at Camp Pendleton prior to being discharged in September 1945.
On October 23, 1947, he married Frances D. Albers at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Goodhue. They farmed in Hay Creek until 1951 when they moved to a farm west of Goodhue, where they also raised registered Black Angus cattle. His final three sires were each sons of international grand champions at the livestock show in Chicago. Mr. Huebner served several terms with the Goodhue Fire Truck Association, served as both Director and Chair of the Goodhue Elevator Board, served several terms as Director on the Federal Land Bank in Northfield, and was a member of the American Aberdeen Angus Association. In addition, he served his church in a number of leadership positions. In 1973, the family moved to Goodhue and he raised poultry until his retirement in 1981. Mrs. Huebner died on March 29, 2001. In autumn 2004, Mr. Huebner moved to Rochester to live with his daughter Vicky. In autumn 2009, he returned to Goodhue where he resided with his daughter, Carol. In late June, 2010 he entered Golden Living Center West for rehab.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Carl) Bartsch of Goodhue and Vicky Huebner of Rochester; four grandchildren, Matthew Bartsch of Zumbrota, Marissa (Paul) Myers of Zumbrota, Marcus Bartsch of Red Wing, and Melanie Bartsch of Zumbrota; one sister, Arleen Holey of Kasson and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday August 19, 2010 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to the service at the church.
