Virginia Mae Sayers

August 30, 1923 — March 24, 2013

Virginia Mae Sayers, 89 of Red Wing, formerly of Bay City, died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Red Wing Health Center. She was born August 30, 1923 in Red Wing to Walter and Ruth (Steele) Jackson and graduated from Lake City High School in 1941. She then graduated from Bethesda Nursing School and was recruited to US Army as a registered nurse, serving during the end of WW II. After the war was over, she attended the University of Minnesota where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in teaching and went back into the army during the Korean War. On June 6, 1953, she married Charles Sayers in Washington D.C.. They lived in various states throughout the U.S. as well as Germany, before coming to Red Wing in 1968. Virginia worked at St. John's Hospital and then at the Ellsworth Care Center, where she was employed for 23 years, retiring in 2000. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Bay City Harding Hall Darrington #357 American Legion, having served as Chaplain and she also volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Drives. Virginia loved to garden, play euchre and cribbage and was a talented seamstress. She also enjoyed knitting, quilting, baking, spending time with her family and going to the Flueger family get-togethers.

She is survived by 3 children, Ruth Sayers of Red Wing, JoAnn (Gary) Magnuson of Rosemount and Timothy (Gayle) Sayers of Parkville, MO; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will be later in the spring at Svea Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the church.
