Virgil Ferber

Virgil Fredrick Ferber, age 89, of Red Wing, died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Red Wing Health Center. He was born on December 5, 1922, in Red Wing to Phillip and Martha (Neumann) Ferber. He graduated in 1942 from Red Wing Central High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945 in the Pacific Theatre. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. His unit, 148 Infantry, 37th Division serving in the South Pacific during World War II received the Presidential Citation from President Roosevelt. On June 20, 1946 he married Audrey Johnson at the Christ Episcopal Church. They lived in Red Wing and for 40 years he worked for S.B. Foot Tanning Company. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Disable American Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and for 59 years, the Red Wing Elks BPOE #845. He loved fishing, hunting and did woodworking, making furniture and carving.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Audrey of Red Wing and 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer and Herman Ferber and on sister, Ann Gaedtke.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Michael Way officiating. Burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to Christ Church Building Maintenance Fund or donor's choice.
