Virgil Frederick Eckhoff, 92, of Red Wing, died August 31, 2013 at St. Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona. He was born February 22, 1921 to Frederick and Mathilda (Schroeder) Eckhoff in Wells Creek, Goodhue County. He attended rural schools in Wells Creek before serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 until he was honorably discharged in 1945. On September 18, 1947 he married Marjorie Linder in Plum City, WI. He worked at the LaGrange Shoe Factory, 15 years at Klitzke Body Shop and then the next 5 years working for the Downtown Dodge before owning and operating Eckhoff Body Shop, for 15 years, until retiring in 1984. Marjorie died on May 25, 2013. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, and Burnson Lilyblad VFW Post #1218.Virgil bowled for 48 years and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and traveling.
He is survived by three daughters, Linda (Paul) Goodfellow of Winona, Barbara (Steven) Larson of Christmas, Florida and Susanne (Brad) Cutshall of Mantorville, Minn.; six grandchildren, Ben Sadowski, Stacey Sadowski, Lisa Shorten, Mark Larson, Alyssa Cutshall and Katelyn Cutshall; five great grandchildren, Mat, Gavin, Grace, Tyler and Kaylee; one brother, Glenn (Bernice) Eckhoff of Red Wing as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; one sister, Doris Wilson; and son-in-law, Daniel Sadowski.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, September 5, 2013 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to the American Legion.
