Viola Eloise Lien, 86, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. She was born March 4, 1927 to Selmer and Clara (Swan) Rude in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from high school in Saskatchewan, Canada. She then attended Teachers Training Department in Cannon Falls, Minn. For three years she taught county school in Roscoe Township in Goodhue County. On June 24, 1950 she married Fredde Desmond Lien at Stordahl Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Roscoe and West Concord areas. They later moved to Alberta, Canada. In the fall of 1963 they moved to Red Wing where, for 35 years, Viola ran a day care out of her home. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women's group and taught Sunday school. She was also a chair person for the prayer chain. She enjoyed photography as well as playing the organ and piano. The family recalls her love for traveling to places like the Minnesota Lakes, Norway and Colorado. She will be remembered for her strong faith.
Viola is survived by three children, Janelyn (Phillip) Navarro of Stillwater, Brenda Moskal of Eden Prairie and David (Cheryl) Lien of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Joel (Liz) Moskal, Zachary Navarro, Greg (Alicia) Lien, Kristina (Adam) Rein, Sarah (Chad) Schaffer and Kathy (Ryan) Mareck; four great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Stanley, Milton (Gladys) and Alvin (Alice) Rude, all of Alberta, Canada. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one grandson, Philip Navarro.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 19, 2013 at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn chapel and one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or donor's choice. A special thanks to the Valentines staff for their love and kindness shown to Viola and her family these past two years.
