Vine Herbert Wells, 69, Welch, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the Red Wing Health Center. He was born November 6, 1939 in Pipestone, Minnesota, the son of Sam and Hazel (Campbell) Wells. He attended schools in St. Paul and Red Wing. He worked in construction for many years and helped build the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant. He served his community by being on the Tribal Council, a school liaison officer and serving on the Gaming Commission. An avid sportsman, he played baseball, and enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and was a Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife, Rita of Prairie Island; one son, Jeff (Kim) Wells of Prairie Island, one grandson, Gavin Vine Wells; two step-sons, Michael Jacobson of Prairie Island and Robert Jacobson of Wyoming; one brother, Robert Campbell of Milaca, Minn; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gordon Wells and Melvin Campbell; two sisters, Elaine Stannard and Fern Kraushner; and one step-son, Jon Jacobson.

Memorial service will be at 1 p. m. Monday, March 23, 2009 at Prairie Island Community Center with Reverend Johnson Loud officiating. Private burial will be in the Church of the Messiah Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Jacobson, Jeff Wells, Freeman Johnson, Nate Mansur, Robert Booth and Robert Knoll. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Fairbanks, Michael Medjanyk, Jr., Darrell Campbell, John Campbell, Robert Jacobson and Floyd Wells. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday and continue until the time of the service at the Community Center. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association.
