Vernon R. Swanson

November 20, 1924 — November 23, 2012

Vernon R. Swanson, lifelong resident of Red Wing, died peacefully at his home on Friday, Nov. 23, just days after his 88th birthday.

Vern was born on Nov. 20, 1924, the son of Richard and Esther Swanson. He graduated from Central High School in 1942, was drafted into the Army the following year, and served his country until being honorably discharged in January of 1946.

After World War II, he returned to Red Wing and married his childhood sweetheart, Frances E. Joseph, on Sept. 21, 1946. Always a hard worker, Vernon was employed many places throughout his life, including Jorgenson's Chevrolet, the Minnesota Correctional Facility, Lee Line, and the Red Wing Fire Department from which he retired as an assistant chief.

Vern was a member of First Lutheran Church of Red Wing, the American Legion, and the VFW. He also volunteered his time and service to many different organizations throughout his life. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and tinkering, as well as spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two daughters, Sherida (Gary) Ostrander, Joelyn (Kevin) Mullaney, and one son, Kim (Georgia) Swanson; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Marion Dosdall; and several nieces and nephews.

Always wanting to be helpful, Vern chose to donate his body to the Mayo Clinic for teaching and research purposes, so there will be no visitation. Please join us for a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, to honor and celebrate the life of a great man.
