Vernon J. Gerken age 91 of Lake City passed away September 1, 2009 at the Lake City Hospital Mayo Health System.
Vernon was born January 4, 1918 in Gilford Township, in Wabasha County to Henry & Freida (Hoeft) Gerken. He grew up in Belvidere Township. Vernon married Florence Miller September 25, 1948 at St. John's Lutheran Bear Valley Church. They farmed in West Albany Township in Wabasha County. In 1972 they retired from farming and moved to Lake City. He then worked at UBC in Lake City for 10 years. He has been a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Lake City since 1950. Vernon has served as an elder, trustee and outside custodian for a number of years. He also served on the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery board for many years. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.
Vernon is survived by his wife Florence; a daughter, Kathleen (Dwaine) Kamnetz of Chatfield, MN; a son, Kenneth Gerken of Lake City; two grandchildren, Darin (Brooke Morgan) Kamnetz of Eden Prairie, MN, Mary Beth Kamnetz of Chatfield, MN; two half-sisters, Verdell Yotter of Lake City and Phyliss Thomforde of Lake City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Gerken; one half-brother, Delmar Brinkman; two half-sisters, Eva Yotter and Ethel Bollum.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 4, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lake City. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church. Memorial are preferred to Bethany Lutheran Church.
