Verneil Johanna Johnson, 94, of Red Wing, died Monday, December 23, 2013 at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park. She was born on March 9, 1919 in Lake City to Alfred and Sophie (Witt) Roper. She attended country school in West Florence Township. On January 26, 1938 she married Frederick Klenke. Together they had four children. They later divorced. In 1948 they moved to Red Wing where she worked at the Red Wing Shoe Company. On June 11, 1960 she married Charley Johnson and they lived in Hager Heights from 1961 until 1973 when they moved to Texas, to take care of her mother. In 1978 they moved back to Red Wing. Charley died in 1996. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Burnson Lillyblad #1218 and Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54 Post Auxiliaries. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling, music and baking bread. Her family recalls how she always enjoyed trying new things, was up for a challenge and the love she provided for her family and always being there for them whenever needed.
Survivors include three children; Frederick, (Pat) Klenke of Hager City, Nancy (Don) Larson of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Mary Lou (Rodney) Wilson of Red Wing; 11 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charley, one son, Gene Klenke; one grandson, Axel Bergstrom; one brother, Wilbert Roper and one sister, Eunice Brunkhorst.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.
