Funeral services for Verna Wharton will be held Tuesday May 3rd at 1:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel. The Reverend Maurice E. Hagen will officiate. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Wharton, 96, of Rochester, died Thursday April 28, 2011 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.
Verna Irene Hanson was born to Nels and Carolina Hanson on November 28, 1914 at Hendricks, Minnesota. Raised on a farm near Hendricks, she was baptized on January 15, 1915 at the Blom Prairie Lutheran Brethren Church at Toronto, South Dakota. In 1931 she married Melvin Wharton. Verna was a homemaker and, beginning in the 1950s, she worked 20 years for Waters-Conley. In the 1970s she was employed at Massey's Department Store.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Stuve of Rochester; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian Johnson of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin in 1969; a son Lyle Wharton in 2007; a grandson Keith Wharton in 2000; 6 brothers, Howard, Morris, Orean, Lloyd, Eugene, and Burnie Hanson; and 2 sisters, Marcella Nygard, and Darlene Odell.
Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the day of the service at the funeral home.
