ROCHESTER A memorial service for Verlyn Haukom will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Mahn Family Funeral Home Rochester Chapel with Rev. Carol Shaffer, Chaplain at Seasons Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in West St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery near Rock Dell, MN at a later date.
Mr. Haukom, 77, of Rochester, died Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2008) at Seasons Hospice after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 8, 1931 in Vernon Township, Dodge County, MN; and attended Hayfield schools. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955 and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant. He also served in the Minnesota National Guard for seventeen years. On Aug. 27, 1966 he married Ilene Jorgensen in Rochester, she survives. Mrs. Haukom is retired from Electro Assemblies of Rochester. The couple lived in southern Minnesota until moving to Rochester in 1982. He worked for the Mayo Clinic as a supervisor in the Hazardous Waste Disposal Department until retiring in 1994. He then started his own business, Haukom Country Furniture, which he operated for fourteen years until becoming ill. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include four daughters, Barb Bates of Little Falls, MN; Liz (Warren) Hauger of Stewartville, MN; Vicky Haukom and special friend Bob Wangsness of Rochester; and Missy (Darrick) Kostel of Rochester; a son Phillip of Rochester; five grandchildren Shannon and Jake Kostel, and Kristie, Kelly, and Jeremy Hauger; and a brother Curt (Ardis) of Brownsdale, MN. He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
