ROCHESTER - Verlaine Walkes, age 92, of Rochester, died Tuesday Nov. 8, 2016 at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN. Born Verlaine Betty Helm March 22, 1924 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Mother and Father: Amelia Louise Kaste and Albert Herman Helm. Verlaine's first presidential vote: Thomas Dewey in 1948. Her first boyfriend was Jerry Sprong in college...obviously he was no Roland Walkes. Roland asked Verlaine's dad if he could court her. Albert said ok. So one Thanksgiving he came to the family house and everyone visited and played games. Amelia made supper. Verlaine's first kiss was her first date with Roland when he said good night.
Verlaine taught piano lessons for many years. She was active in every church that Roland was the pastor. She played piano and organ. She was a substitute teacher for a while. She taught Sunday school. Sang so-los, duets and quartets with her family and whenever she was needed. She was active in the Women's Cir-cle group. Verlaine was strong and deliberate in her faith that Jesus was her personal savior and gave her life to him at an early age.
Verlaine attended Lincoln Grade School, Central Junior High and Central Senior High School in Roches-ter. In High School she was in Language, Knitting and Science Club. After graduating in 1942 she attend-ed Hamline University and was within a few credits of graduating when she decided the love of her life, Roland, had captured her heart and soul. They were married and she moved to Oregon to be with him as he attended seminary. Their first home was in Butler, SD. They lived on $100 a month. She dedicated her life to God and to Roland's calling as a minister. She was the quintessential pastor's wife. Giving of herself to his needs and the church.
Verlaine earned $.80 an hour in her first job at Stephenson's department store in Rochester. She also liked riding the train. She once traveled from St. Paul to LaMars, Iowa to visit her "boyfriend". Ahh Roland, you are the suave one.
On their honeymoon they were late getting to the hotel. So they had a small room and a shared bathroom. Bad start but it lasted for 69 years so it worked out. Verlaine was cooking dinner when she heard about JFK being assassinated. Her favorite meal: Fried Chicken and the fixings. Favorite book: The Bible. Fa-vorite movie: Driving Miss Daisey.
She enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, watching sports and bible study. In her youth she liked to roller skate, play piano and go to school. Her favorite radio program growing up was Fibber McGee and Molly.
Survivors include her daughter Janice (Les) Frydenlund of Eagan, MN; her son Jon (Darla Anderson) Walkes of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren Adam Frydenlund, and Paul (Samantha) Frydenlund, and two great grandchildren Bennett, and William Frydenlund. She was preceded in death by her husband Roland, who died Jan. 13, 2015, her parents, and a sister.
