Valborg Lorraine Maland Haugen Teig was born on March 31, 1919 in Frost, MN to Henry and Alpha Maland. She graduated from Blue Earth High School as valedictorian and St. Olaf College with honors. She then worked at the University of Minnesota as a registered dietician. On June 14, 1947, Val married Anthony Sigfrid Haugen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, MN. They lived in Wanamingo, MN and had 4 children, Virginia, Paul, Catherine, and Sheila. In 1966-68, the Haugens sponsored a foreign exchange student from Laos, Somkeng Luangphinith, who became a valued member of the family and the community. Val returned to work as a dietician at Rochester Methodist Hospital from 1967-1980. In 1969, Val's husband, Tony tragically died of a heart attack. Val met Donald Teig in 1979 and they married in 1980. For almost 32 years, they enjoyed their summers in Wanamingo and winters in Sun Lakes, Arizona. In her later years of life, she enjoyed living at Heritage Hills in Wanamingo. Her final years at Twin Rivers Senior Campus in Cannon Falls, MN brought happiness and peace to Val.
Music was an important part of Val's life. She sang in her church choirs in Minnesota and Arizona. She enjoyed singing in the "Villagers" choral group for many years. She also enjoyed playing handbells, gardening, baking, cooking, quilting, needlework, traveling, sports, and family. Her strong Norwegian heritage was passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Val passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the age of 99 years at Twin Rivers Senior Campus in Cannon Falls, MN.
She is survived by her children: Ginny (Stan) Karbowski, Paul (Sue) Haugen, Cathy Faucher, Sheila (Doug) Gehring; her step-children: Linda (Randy) Buns, Barbara Brue; her grandchildren: Anthony, Zachary, Nickolas (Brittany), Spencer (Kristi), Malachi, Marit (Christopher); Natalie; Jason (Maggie), Heather (Ryan), Jeremy (Tera), and Jonathan; and her great grandchildren: Maxim, Anja, Cecilia, Hannah, Jacob, Chance, Silvia, and Sophia. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wanamingo, Minnesota with visitation one hour prior to the service.
