Tom Valtakis

Peter "Tom" Valtakis, 49, of Rochester, formerly of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 9, 2012. He was born July 24, 1962 in Oakland, California to Peter and Catherine (Scarper) Valtakis. His family moved to Red Wing in 1969, and he was a 1980 graduate of Red Wing Central High. He married Marsha Schriever in 1986, and they had two children; they later divorced. Tom received his LPN degree from the Red Wing Vo-Tech and had worked at the Red Wing Health Center for several years, as well as other area nursing homes. Tom had recently moved to Rochester, where he currently resided. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing and hunting and also woodcarving. As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball and had also been a girl's softball coach. Tom had a strong faith and greatly enjoyed reading, especially the bible.

He is survived by two children, Larrissa (Chris Sparks) Valtakis and Alexander Valtakis, both of Winona; his mother, Catherine (Tom) Fairclough of Mission, Texas; father, Peter (Pat) Valtakis of Red Wing; siblings, John (Carrie) Valtakis of Hastings, Jollienne (Tom) Mrozek of Hastings and Jeff Valtakis of Brainerd; many nieces and nephews and his paternal grandmother, Rosemary Taylor of California.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Valtakis, maternal grandparents and a paternal grandfather.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012 at United Lutheran Church, Red Wing. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
