Thomas C. Schneider

March 2, 1963 — December 8, 2018

Thomas Carl Schneider of Red Wing, Minnesota, passed suddenly on Saturday evening, December 8th after a wonderful day ice fishing with his son, JT, and their buddies. We are grateful for JT's immediate CPR response and the team that helped support Tom that day.
He was born in Red Wing, MN on March 2, 1963, the son of Carl and Edna (Williamson) Schneider. Tom graduated from Red Wing High School in 1981 and attended Lincoln Technical College and received a diploma in Mechanical and Diesel Engineering. Tom worked at Banitt Motors initially as a mechanic and then as a service advisor. Tom became a volunteer firefighter in 1984 and joined the Red Wing Fire Department in 1991 as a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician. During his tenure at the fire department, he worked as a mechanic and handled general maintenance and repair of fire and emergency medical equipment. Tom was certified as a Firefighter II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I and EMT-Paramedic. In 1998, he became a Captain-in-Training. In 1999, Tom became the Fire Prevention Specialist responsible for fire code interpretation, enforcement and inspections, fire and arson investigation, public fire education and juvenile fire-setter intervention. In 2004, he was promoted to Captain. After serving as Interim Fire Chief, he was confirmed as Fire Chief on June 9, 2008. Tom retired from the Fire Department in 2016. He was currently employed in a temporary capacity at Xcel Energy.
Tom began dating his high school sweetheart, Kristi Carrington, in 1980. They have been married for 31 years. They have two children, Danielle Schneider and Jonathan Thomas Carrington Schneider (JT).
When asked "What did Tom do?", it is easier to answer, "What didn't he do?" Tom enjoyed boating, woodworking, construction projects, skiing, snowboarding, scuba diving, skydiving, hiking, traveling, reading, music and, of course, motorcycle riding. Tom and Kristi had wonderful family trips and created many memories with the motorcycle gang: Randy and Diana Williamson, Brad and Kathy Anderson, and Darrel and Beth Hanson (all high school sweethearts). Most of all, Tom cherished people and his relationship with his son, JT, his best buddy. Tom's saddest day of the year was always the first day of each school year when JT and the homies headed back to school and Tom lost his playmates. Papa Tom loved those kids and spending time with them.
Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Danielle Schneider, his parents Carl and Edna Schneider, and his father-in-law, Larry Carrington. Tom is well-loved and missed by his family including Nancy and Barney Flynn, Joni Schneider, Carol and Rob Hoeft, John Schneider and Rhonda Taylor, Sandra Carrington, Michele and Rick Moskwa, Melissa and Paul Irwin. Nieces and nephews include Adam and Deyonne Flynn, Greg, Meghan and Shea Flynn, Mark, Heather, Kaylee and Mason Flynn, Stephen Flynn and Tiffany Lorenzi, Andrew and Stephanie Hoeft, Charles Hoeft, Jason and Stephanie Hoeft, Derek, Katie, Ross and Cooper Borchardt, Matthew and Jessie Fairbanks, Cori Fairbanks, Dixon Irwin and Mackenzie Irwin, Zack, Abby, Connor, Logan, and Kennley Moskwa and Jake Moskwa.
We look forward to creating more great stories and toasting to Tom around the campfire, surrounded by perhaps a few fireworks and dragonflies (for more information about the dragonfly project, go to www.dragonflyproject.org).
Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Church of St. Joseph, with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Holy Family Hall in the Church of St. Joseph. A prayer service and sharing of stories will be from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. Visitation on Friday will be at the church and will begin at 10:00. Tom will be honored by the Fire Department by taking a last trip past the station. If you'd like to join us, please be at the Mahn Funeral home promptly at 9:30 a.m. and we'll follow one another by car and proceed to the church.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider becoming an organ/tissue donor. Tom continued to give of himself after death and because of his donations, he will help 70-100 people. Other memorials could be made to the Environmental Learning Center in Red Wing where Tom served on the board, Packing for the Weekend (a local United Way project helping our kids to have meals over the weekend) Minnesota Public Radio, or the Sheldon Theatre. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
