Sverre George Solheim

Sverre George Solheim, 86, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Red Wing. He was born August 9, 1928, in Red Wing, to Sverre M. and Agnes (Kruger) Solheim and graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1946. He attended and graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's degree in music and then received a Master of Science degree in guidance and counseling from Mankato State University. From 1946-48, he served in the US Army, receiving the rank of Sergeant. On May 13, 1950, he was united in marriage to Beverly Klair at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Goodhue. He was a music teacher in numerous public schools in Iowa and Minnesota, and for 22 years was a Guidance Counselor at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls. In 1992 they returned to Red Wing. He was an active member of United Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway. Since 1962 he has been a Lion member, belonging to clubs in Danube, Thief River Falls and Red Wing and had also served as a Past District Governor for 5M11.
He volunteered at the Goodhue County Historical Society and at the Minnesota Correctional Facility. He enjoyed woodworking, landscaping and reading, especially historical writings.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; three children, Patricia Barrett of Chicago, IL, Scott (Joyce Jacobson) Solheim of Rochester and Kristin Stevens of Palatine, IL; three grandchildren, Sean Barrett, Shannon (Tommy) Van Lente and Cody Stevens; four step-grandchildren, Alyson Klausing, Joshua, Justin and Jackie Jacobson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred and Solveig Solheim and two brothers, Anker and Einar.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 8 at United Lutheran Church with Reverend Justin Boeding officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
