Stuart "Stu" Edward Schmidt, age 89, of Red Wing died Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at his home. He was born on February 5, 1926 in Red Wing to Edward and Blanche (Lange) Schmidt. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1944 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46. Stu then attended St. Thomas College. He married Arlin Janisch at the Lost Creek Mission Church in Lost Creek, WI on August 5, 1947. He began his career with the Postal Service in 1948, and went on to be the superintendent of postal operations in Red Wing. He later served at acting postmaster in Lake City and Faribault and postmaster in Hudson, WI before retiring in 1981 after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing, Burnson Lillyblad VFW Post #1218, Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Red Wing YMCA, and Red Wing Booster Club. In his free time, Stu loved to hunt, fish, play golf, travel, bowl, coach youth sports, and listen to music, especially from the Big Band era. He especially loved to spend time with his family at sporting and school events.
He is survived by his wife, Arlin; eight children, Jane Gisslen of Red Wing, Gail (Daniel) Ryan of Goodhue, Patrice (Bill) Rooney of Red Wing, Mary (Chuck Busdosh) Schmidt of Red Wing, Margaret (George) Noesen of Red Wing, Steven Schmidt of Red Wing, Stacie (John) Gorman of Red Wing, and Andrea (David) Scamehorn of St. Anthony, MN; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one brother, Eugene (Janeth) Schmidt of Deerwood, MN; two sisters, Shirley (Polly) Nystrom of Austin, MN and Catherine "Katy" (Curt Haller) Jorgensen of Red Wing; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Joel Schmidt; and a son-in-law, Nicholas Gisslen.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the Church, Mayo Red Wing Hospice or donor's choice.
