Stephen George Hammes, 67 of Red Wing, died suddenly on Saturday, January 16, 2021. He was born June 17, 1953, in Minneapolis, to Joseph and Ida (Coble) Hammes. He graduated from Osseo High School in 1971 and worked in the Twin Cities for several years as a produce manager at local grocery stores. On July 4, 1994, he was united in marriage to Judy Hammes in St. Charles. In 1998 they moved to Red Wing, and after he received his associate’s degree from Century College, he began working in the IT Department of the City of Red Wing, where he worked until his retirement in 2018. Steve was even-keeled kind of guy, but he took his enthusiasm for the MN Twins and Vikings pretty serious. He had a sense of humor and always enjoyed music, especially playing guitar and bass. He had a love for the Las Vegas area of Nevada and was hoping to purchase a home there to live in his retirement years.
He is survived by his son, Andy of Red Wing; daughter, Karen (Zac) Perkins of Osseo; grandchildren Gabe and Olivia; brother, Joe (JoAnn) Hammes of Isle, MN; sister, Linda (Eric) Petitpierre of Foster, VA; a twin brother, Greg Hammes of Fridley and his pets, Bailey and Muffin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Judy, in 2019.
No services will be held. Memorials preferred to Red Wing Public Schools. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
