Stephen "Homer" Castner

Stephen Carl "Homer" Castner, 71 of Red Wing, died Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born on September 17, 1944 in Waukegan, Illinois to Lloyd and Mildred (Krause) Castner. At a young age his family moved to Red Wing. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1962 and then served in the US Air Force. On April 12, 1969 he married Carol Engeldinger. He was a police officer for the Red Wing Police Department for many years before he went back to school. He attended the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and received a Bachelor of Science Degree and then started his own accounting business, Stephen Castner LTD. He was very passionate about city government, serving on the Red Wing City Council from 1981-1983 and then again from 1999-2009. He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Red Men Club, Red Wing Elks BPOE #845, Knights of Columbus, Red Wing Golf Club and Mount Frontenac Golf Club. He was an avid Twins, Vikings and Gopher fan and was a great supporter of his children and grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include one daughter, Stefanie (Jason) Binner of Red Wing; one son, Chris (Cathy Phillips) Castner of Red Wing; two grandchildren, Coby and Madison Castner; Cathy's children, Hunter and Brynn Phillips; two sisters-in-law, Susan (Gary) Grote of Prior Lake and Laurie Engeldinger of Red Wing; two nephews, Mark (Karen) Castner of Rosemount and John (Kris) Castner of Red Wing and special friend, Betty Stoltenberg of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carol on January 20, 2013 and one brother, David.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Deacon Pat Evans officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m.to 7 p.m. Monday, January 11 with a 7 p.m. Legion Prayer service at the funeral home. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service.
