Shirley Mae Nelson, 87, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Red Wing. She was born in 1926, in Valley City, North Dakota, to Ralph and Ella (Anderson) Bird. She graduated from high school in Colfax, Wisconsin then attended and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a degree in English and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri with a master's degree in Education. In 1946 she married her college sweetheart Edgar Nelson. Their love flourished for 68 years. While raising her seven children, she began her career in 1967 as a high school English teacher in St. Louis, Missouri. She and Edgar moved to Red Wing in 2003 where they have since resided. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was also a volunteer for Faith in Action. Shirley was always involved in her community, school, church and neighborhood and enjoyed spending time gardening, reading and being with her grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Edgar; 7 children, Stan (Pat) Nelson of Toronto, Canada, Rod Nelson of Austin, TX, Greg (Ann) Nelson of Raynham, MA, Mark (Lila) Nelson of Huntsville, AL, Tim (Ellen) Nelson of Holt, MO, Beth Nelson of Arden Hills and Peggy (Randy) Decker of Red Wing; many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren along with many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ronald and 3 grandchildren, Katrina, Nicole and Dane.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, at First Lutheran Church with Vicar Jeremy Nausin officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Family. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice or your local United Way.
