Shirley Anne Carlson, 90, of Red Wing, died Friday, July 20, 2018 at Deer Crest. She was born April 19, 1928 in Red Wing to William and Della (Mellstrom) Hodge. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1946. She married the love of her life, Richard Carlson, at Christ Episcopal Church on September 17, 1948. She worked at many local grocery stores demonstrating food samples. In her younger years she loved to roller skate and to go dancing with Richard. She also enjoyed traveling, country music, reading and watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights and collecting Hummel hand-painted figurines. She was also talented at needle work and could both cross-stitch and embroider. She was a lifetime member of Christ Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher and a member of the Altar Guild for a number of years. Shirley will be remembered for the joy she took in raising her children and helping others.
Shirley is survived by her children, daughter, Bonnie (BJ) Johnson of Red Wing, son, Terry Carlson of Minneapolis, daughter, JoEllen (Bill) Helmke of Oakdale and son, David Carlson of Dallas, Texas; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Dullum, Brandon (Stacey) Klahn and Nathan (Julia) Haustein; four great-grandchildren, Stacy (Ryan) Hopp, Traci Dullum, Alivia Klahn and Gregory Haustein; two great great-grandchildren, Nicole and Allison Hopp; sisters, Jacklyn McLean of Madison, Wis. and Ann (Manny) Schreiber of Ann Arbor, Mich.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard; brother-in-law, Bruce McLean, nephew, Michael McLean and her parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, with Father Tristan English officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Oakwood. Memorials are preferred to Christ Episcopal Church.
