Shirley M. Baker age 89 of Wanamingo died on Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. The funeral service will be on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Wanamingo Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday for one hour prior to the service at the church
Shirley Mae Nelson was born on June 21, 1929 in Roscoe Township, Goodhue County, MN to Arthur and Lillian (Erickson) Nelson. Shirley grew up on the family farm. She attended Roscoe Country School and graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1947. Shirley worked at Hirman Insurance in Rochester from 1947-1951. On March 31, 1951 she married Erling "Bake" Baker at Stordahl Lutheran Church and they made their home in Wanamingo. Shirley was the secretary at the Wanamingo Schools from 1953-1955 and in 1957 they purchased a gas/service station in Wanamingo and renamed it Bakers Service Station. Shirley did the bookwork for the station until retiring in 2000. Shirley enjoyed baking; especially at Christmas time making Norwegian delicacies like lefse, flat bread and krumkakes with her family, reading, playing cards, coffee and conversation with friends and loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Shirley was an active member of Wanamingo Lutheran Church and enjoyed the church bazaar.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Bruce (Rebecca) Baker of Wanamingo and Dean (Sherri) Baker of Mazeppa; daughter, Kimberly (David) Froyum of Wanamingo; grandchildren, Jill (Ryan) Durst, Troy (Hannah) Baker, Krista (Luke) Swanson, Kari (Jerry) Nelson, Bradley Froyum and Katlyn Froyum; great-grandchildren, Kinsley and Layton Durst, Lexi and Zane Beck, Amelia Baker, Grace, Magnus and Beck Swanson, Charlie and Avery Nelson; sister, Janet (Dexter) Henschel of Albert Lea.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Erling "Bake" on November 14, 1996; parents, Arthur and Lilian Nelson; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Roger Floan.
