Shirley Jean Badker, 75, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at her home at DeerCrest. She was born September 11, 1941 to John and Florence (Even) Hanisch in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls before marrying her childhood sweetheart James Badker on July 16, 1960. The couple had three children. When Jim's job transferred him, the family moved to Red Wing. She was a member of the Church of St. Joseph where she helped clean the church and the rectory. She also volunteered with the MS Society. Shirley enjoyed walking in the fall, playing cards, baking, cooking and fishing. She loved flowers and tending to her garden. Above all, Shirley was a gifted caretaker and she dedicated her life from an early age to the care of others. She left school after the 8th grade to help raise her siblings. She was a wonderful mother and a loving caretaker for Jim and even had an active role in raising her grandchildren. Her greatest joy was playing and taking walks with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Jim; daughters, Julie (Jon) Sell of Red Wing and Kammy (Bruce) Plein of Red Wing; son, Peter (Jill) Badker of Red Wing; 6 grandchildren, Jeremy (Jenna) Sell, Jennifer (Derrick) Cox, Katie (Dan) Kelly, Brooke (Brent) Olson, Shelby (Micah) Wyatt and Matthew Badker; 7 great grandchildren, Jonah, Jade, Kayla, Brady, Savanah, Chandler and Emmalee; two brothers, Don and John "Jack" Hanisch, both of Sioux Falls; two sister, Sharon " Kay" Adkins of Sioux Falls and Debbie Peterson of Eau Claire, Wis.
She is preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Zoe Hanisch; brothers, Robert, Richard, Ray and James Hanisch; sister, Carol Keller and infant brother, Terry Hanisch.
Mass of Resurrection will be 10 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
