Sherry Ann (Albers) Stechmann

Sherry Ann Stechmann, 71, of Red Wing, died Sunday, February 26, 2023 at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Methodist Campus in Rochester.

She was born June 19, 1951 in Red Wing to Norman and Joan (Von Bargen) Albers. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1969. She went onto receive an associate of arts degree from Winona State University while employed there full time. She loved attending and working at schools. Afterward she worked for Red Wing Public Schools from 1974-78 and again from 1990-2000. She married William Stechmann on February 14, 1976 and the couple raised 2 sons, Jacob and Samuel. She considered herself very fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom during that work gap. Sherry referred to that time as the best years of her life.

For 13 years or so, she assisted and taught Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and Confirmation classes at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. In 2001 she worked at a faculty secretary at Inver Hills Community College until her retirement in 2015.

Upon retirement she joined the Merry Martha’s Quilters at St. Paul’s. She also began piano lessons and audited two Chinese language classes at Century College.

Sherry enjoyed sewing for home decoration, for her children when they were young, and most recently, for her grandchildren. She also liked bicycling, walking, hiking, and in her younger years, rollerblading. She also did some snowshoeing as spending time outdoors was a favorite past time. She also volunteered for the Sheldon Theater and belonged to the Hiawatha Genealogy Society.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bill; sons, Jacob (Amy) and Samuel (Qin); grandchildren, Daisy and Charles; brother, Gary (Jane) Albers; sister, Janice Swartz; as well as nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2023 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Bill Klavetter officiating. Visitation will be from noon – 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at church. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the church and the Red Wing Public Library.
