Sarah Jane Schuck

June 24, 1950 — November 29, 2014

On November 29, 2014 at 12:27 p.m., Sarah passed away at her home in Hager City, WI, surrounded by her loved ones, following a long battle with cancer. Sarah was 64 years old.

Sarah (Christiansen) Schuck was born in Red Wing, MN on June 24, 1950. She was the fourth of eight children of Walter and Hattie Christiansen. Sarah grew up on a farm on County Road O in Hager City, WI and graduated from Ellsworth High School. After high school, she moved in with her grandmother, Christine Withers in Red Wing. While working at a bakery, her friend, Linda, introduced her to Blair Schuck. Sarah and Blair were married on December 22, 1972.

Sarah worked for 25 years at the Red Wing Shoe Company. In the late 1980's, she began fulfilling her dream of earning a college degree. While working full-time and raising her four children, she started taking evening classes at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. Soon she was admitted to the weekend program at Augsburg College, and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Social Work.

In 1996, Sarah became the Executive Director of the Goodhue County Red Cross. In her 15 years there, she raised millions of dollars, taught hundreds of CPR, First Aid and Baby-sitting classes and helped respond to numerous fires and other local disasters. In addition to her position at the Red Cross, she worked part-time with developmentally disabled adults at REM. She retired from the Red Cross in 2011, but kept working at REM until a few months before her death.

Sarah enjoyed being involved with her family and in her community. She was a 4-H leader and a church youth group leader and participated in Toastmasters. She also loved planning events. She organized the Hager City Children's Festival, family reunions, surprise birthday and anniversary parties and numerous Red Cross galas.

Sarah's hobbies included crocheting, sewing, canning and music. She sang at weddings, funerals and in church and shared her love of music with her children.

Sarah was dedicated to her family. She raised four children and took an active role in her four grandchildren's lives. She and her husband, Blair would have celebrated their 42nd anniversary in December.

Sarah handled her long illness with grace and strength. She loved sharing inspirational messages and quotes.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Hattie Christiansen. Sarah is survived by her husband, Blair Schuck; her children Christina Schuck, Haven Schuck, Walter Schuck and Janeanna Rivera; her son-in-laws Matt Sasson and Matthew Rivera; her daughter-in-law, Alicia Schuck and her grandchildren Coby Schuck, Breanna Schuck, Jacob Schuck and Julia Sasson.
