Samuel "Sam" H. Struss

Samuel "Sam" Henry Struss, 88, of Red Wing died Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at his home. He was born on November 28, 1927 in Red Wing to Henry and Mabel (Morley) Struss. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1945 and then went on to serve in the US Army from 1946-47. For a few years he worked for American Optical in Sioux Falls, SD, before moving back to Red Wing, where he worked for Red Wing Optical. On July 2, 1949 he married Jane Buchholtz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He opened Struss Optical on December 4, 1967 and worked there until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54, Red Wing Elks BPOE #845, and the Red Wing Rifle Club. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. His family recalls his many hunting trips, going 45 consecutive years to North Dakota and numerous trips to Alaska.
Sam is survived by his wife, Jane; two children, Jan Struss of Apple Valley and Daniel (Shelly) Struss of Red Wing; four grandchildren, Morley and Chloe Struss, Lindy Schutz and Bryan Struss; five great-grandchildren, Braydon, Sarah, Emily, Olivia, and Nathan and daughter-in-law, Betül Struss of Turkey. He was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Struss, Jr. and his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 7, 2015 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial will follow at Burnside Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, December 6 at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service.
