OBITUARY NOTICE
SALLY RUTH NEWLAND SETZER
Sally Ruth Setzer, 57, of Red Wing, died Wednesday at her home. She was born December 5, 1949 in Mishawaka, Indiana, the daughter of Paul and Lois (Downham) Newland. She graduated from Penn High School in 1968 and married Steven Christopher Setzer on March 21, 1970 in South Bend, Indiana. She earned a BIS (Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Child Psychology and Social Work) degree in 1979 and a Masters Degree in Human and Health Service Administration from Saint Mary's University in Winona in 1991. Her family lived in Minneapolis until 1984, then in Lake City, moving to Red Wing in 1991. She worked as a licensed social worker for the Seminary Home before returning to an earlier library occupation in 1996. She was the Red Wing Public Library Director from 2003-2007. Her love of reading, new technology and public contact made this a "dream" job. She was diagnosed with intestinal leiomyosarcoma in May, 2004, an incurable cancer that eventually defied treatment. She remained as healthy and active as possible, sharing the best of each day with her family, friends and co-workers. She was active in many community and professional organizations and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Steve, of Red Wing; two daughters, Gretchen (Steve) Rings of Chicago and Clara (Andrew) Yori of Rochester; her mother, Lois Wilkinson, her sister, Polly (Larry) Brown and brother, Dave (Jessica) Newland, all of Indiana. She has several nieces and nephews who are scattered around the United States. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Newland and her step-father, Everett Wilkinson.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Wayne Walther officiating. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and on Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Red Wing Public Library Memorial Fund or to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
