Obituary Notice for Ruth Ann Starz
Ruth Ann Starz, age 90, passed away Thursday October 13, 2011 at the Lake City Hospital. She was born on April 26, 1921, in Mazeppa, MN to Carl and Palma (Rohrer) Engelhart. She grew up in Mazeppa and graduated from the Mazeppa High School. She went on to the Rochester Junior College and the Kahler School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1943. She worked as a registered nurse in California from 1943-1946. She then transferred to Rochester, MN. She married Alfred, September 21, 1946, at the United Methodist Church in Red Wing. They lived in the Zumbro Falls area where they operated a dairy farm and raised purebred Ayrshire cattle until they retired and moved to Lake City in 1989. Ruth Ann was a pianist at Zumbro Falls Methodist Church until last year. She was a newspaper correspondent for the Rochester Post Bulletin, Mazeppa Journal, and Lake City Graphic. She was a member of the Zumbro Falls VFW Auxiliary, Zumbro Falls Birthday Club, Former 4-H leader, home extension group, and checked hearing and vision in Lake City and Zumbro Falls Schools for a number of years. Ruth Ann was a member of Zumbro Falls United Methodist Church, Garden Club, Lake City Senior Citizens, and Senior Citizens of Mazeppa. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting rugs and afghans.
She is survived by her three children: Robert (Peggy) Starz of Atwater, MN, Pamela (Len) Laulainen of Minnetonka, MN and Amy (Terry) Niemann Robbinsdale, MN; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and brother, Kerwin (Doris) Engelhart of Rochester.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Starz; one son, Jerry, one infant son, and sister, Audrey Wolfe.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 21 at the United Methodist Church in Lake City with Reverend Dave Neil officiating. Burial will take place at the Zumbro Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October, 20 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to the Mazeppa United Methodist Church or Mazeppa Historical Society. Online condolences can be sent at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com.
