Ruth Margarete McCusker

Ruth Margarete McCusker, 102, of Red Wing, died Monday, June 8, 2020, at her home at Deer Crest. She was born on March 13, 1918, in Berlin, Germany to Kaufmann Ludwig Kurt and Elizabeth Margaret (Stander) Lubach. She attended high school in Germany, but later had to quit to care for her family because of her mother's death. Later she attended a community college where she studied typing and shorthand. She worked as a clerk for a big factory in different offices where she typed, filed, and later operated the switchboards. She went back to school to study Morse code for the German military. She married Harry Schacht in 1942; he died later on during the war. Following the war she worked as a surveyor and in landscaping. This is where she met her husband Joseph McCusker. They married on May 21, 1951, at the Catholic Church in Mannheim, Germany. They moved to the United States in August in 1951. The couple resided in Trimbelle Township, Wisconsin and farmed for seven years. During that time the couple had one son, Peter. Later on they moved to Red Wing where Joseph worked for a grain elevator for several years. Ruth worked at the St. James hotel as a housekeeper until retirement. She loved music, singing, dancing and traveling. She was a member of the Church of St. Joseph.

She is survived by her nieces, Patsy Ludwig and Gabriele Lubach; her son Peter's partner, Mark MacDougall and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Harry and Joseph; one son, Peter; one sister, Margarete Schneider and one brother, Hans Lubach.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2020 at Burnside Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to a Veteran's organization of the donor's choice.
