OBITUARY NOTICE


RUTH HELGESTAD

Ruth Dorothy Helgestad, 102, died Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at Loving Residence in Red Wing where she has resided for the past ten years. She was born on April 27, 1905 in Red Wing, Minnesota to Albert and Emily (Saupe) Scherf. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School and the University of Minnesota receiving a degree in Education. After college she taught competitive sports in elementary and high school grades. She supervised physical education in blind and deaf schools and also the playgrounds in Minneapolis. She was in charge of social dancing at school and directed dances at operettas. In 1944 she joined the US Army serving at Fort Sheridan until 1945. She counseled military patients on vocations and gave orientation talks on civilian subjects. She was in charge of library of vocational books and US Armed Forces institute courses for enlisted men. She moved to California and on October 26, 1946, she married Trygve Helgestad. He died on May 31, 1991. In 1997 she moved back to Red Wing. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Survivors include cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four brothers.


Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Rev. Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Gretchen and David Hill, Lucille Parker and Karen Stoehr. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorial are preferred to Fairivew Red Wing Hospice.
