Ruth Marian Hale

June 15, 1928 — April 29, 2015

Ruth Marian Hale was born June 15, 1928 in Orono, Minnesota. Her parents, Leo John Feser and Florence Ice, were the founders of the Orono Golf Course in Wayzata, Minnesota. It was the first privately owned golf course in Minnesota to have grass greens. She worked her way through college on the family-owned course in the 1940s and 1950s.

She graduated Long Lake Minnesota Grade School, Wayzata Minnesota High School in 1946 and Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1950 with a BA in History and a minor in International Relations in English. She taught in the Minnetonka School District at the old Deep Haven Junior High from 1954 to 1961. She married J. Dudley Hale in 1951. They divorced in 1967. She married Gus Tegeler in 1974 and they divorced in 1976.

She was granted a master's degree in 1966 from the University of Minnesota in Geography with a minor in Agricultural Economics. She received her doctorate in 1971 in Geography from the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation subject was A Map of Vernacular Regions of America. She moved to Pierce County, Wisconsin in 1967 and taught human and regional geography at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls from 1967 to 1994.

She was a member of the Association of American Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education, the Minnesota Council for Geographic Education, and the Pierce County Geographical Society. During her tenure at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, she was a member of the International Studies Committee and a member of the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee.

She was an avid reader, devoted golfer, international traveler, enthusiastic conversationalist and casual gardener. She enjoyed maintaining friendships from grade school, high school and college days, plus dozens of former college students, neighbors, and acquaintances. She loved her Morgan horses, Labrador dogs, cats, wild birds and LIFE!

She is survived by her brothers, Robert (Marilyn) Feser of Florida and David Feser of Virginia, several nieces and nephews and her special friends, Sue and Herb Enberg. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Patricia Schneider, and beloved S.O.

Ruth requested that there be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Slocum Scholarship Fund, Carlton College, Northfield, Minnesota; the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, Minnesota; or the Institute of Historical Survey Foundation, Las Cruces, New Mexico.
