Russell "Cougar" Marshall
Russell Patrick "Cougar" Marshall, 69, of Red Wing, died Monday, June 15, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 23, 1946, in Fargo, North Dakota to Robert and Arlene (Cota) Marshall. He grew up in Dilworth, Minnesota, graduating from high school in 1964 and then attended Moorhead State University graduating with a degree in teaching. His teaching began in Hector, Minnesota, which lasted a year. He moved to Red Wing in the fall of 1970. Russ was united in marriage to the love of his life, Paula Olsen, on June 28, 1975. Russ began working for the Red Wing School District, and for over 41 years, taught, mentored, coached and inspired hundreds of kids. He also served as Dean of Students and as the Activities' Director at the Twin Bluff Middle School. Many may remember his instruction as their Driver's Ed teacher, but by far, most will remember him for his dedication to coaching the Red Wing Wingers-football, baseball, and softball. Russ celebrated 55 years of playing and coaching football. He was most recently honored with the renaming of the Red Wing High School football field to the 'Russ "Cougar" Marshall Field', a recognition of hundreds of games played and hours of practice and sweat put in under his direction.
Although coaching and teacher were a huge part of Russ's life, his time with family and friends was an even bigger part. He lived life to the fullest and was a very avid hunter, taking many hunting trips to South Dakota. He also enjoyed fishing, taking trips to Florida and having morning breakfast with his friends. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, Red Wing Elks BPOE Lodge #845, Pheasants Forever, and the Izzak Walton League.
Russ is survived by his wife, Paula; children, Jamie (Ariel) Rivera of Minneapolis and Molly of Red Wing; siblings, Carol Marshall of Dilworth, Tom (Sabrina) of San Diego and Mike (Kathy) of Fredericksburg, Virginia and nephews, Jake, Patrick, Andrew and Cody Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Resurrection will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2015 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the Church of St. Joseph and for one hour prior to the service on Monday. A celebration of Russ's life will continue, following the service, at Izzak Walton. Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel is handling the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Russ Marshall Scholarship Fund located at Associated Bank, 222 Bush Street, Red Wing, MN 55066.
