Royce Vernell Benson, age 78, of Red Wing, died Sunday, October 28, 2007, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was born on December 11, 1928, in Red Wing, to Monroe and Ann (Wahlin) Benson. He was a 1947 graduate of Red Wing Central High School. He married Donna Vaale on March 5, 1949, at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He began serving with the 135th Infantry, Company B of the Minnesota National Guard in 1947. He was called up to active duty to the U. S. Army from January 16, 1951 to November 12, 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the National Guard as Platoon Sergeant on December 11, 1988. He owned and operated the Benson Floor Service laying carpet and tile for forty years, was a custodian at first Lutheran Church for eight years and a city bus driver for five years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 where he served as Past Commander, and a lifetime member of Red Wing Elks Lodge #845. He built model airplanes and was an avid reader particularly of World War II history. He enjoyed shopping, golfing and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Red Wing; four daughters, Cheryl Marie Benson of Pepin, Wisconsin, Karen (William) Harvey of New Port Richey, Florida, Lori (Brian) Nelson of Red Wing and Kristin Owens of Red Wing; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Terry Benson of Alamogordo, New Mexico. His parents preceded him in death.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church with Reverends Karen Pahl and Carroll Marohl officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with full military honors. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Scott Glad, Ian Harvey, Ryan Harvey, Josh Nelson, Gina Rogers, Sarah Hill, Jessica Morrow and Kaleigh Owens. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday with a Legion prayer service at 7 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the time of service Thursday at the church.
