Roy John Thumann

October 30, 1918 — April 9, 2017

Roy John Thumann, 98, of Red Wing, died Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the Lake City Care Center, where he has resided for the past month. He was born on October 30, 1918, in Featherstone Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota to George and Lydia (Bang) Thumann and attended rural schools in Goodhue County. On June 21, 1941, he married Bernadine Budenski at the Vasa Lutheran Church. From 1943-1946 he served in the US Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Red Wing. For a few years he raised broiler chickens in lower Burnside, worked at Kramers Hatchery in Red Wing and retired in 1980 after 20 years in maintenance for Red Wing Schools. Bernadine died on December 6, 2006. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council and was past president and he also volunteered many years at the Wise Penny Thrift Store. He enjoyed gardening, especially raising raspberries, sawing wood for his furnace and rooting for Minnesota's sports teams, especially the Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Thumann of Red Wing, formerly of Grand Meadow and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother, Bernard and two sisters, Blanche Swartley and Pearl Holst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be at the St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to St. John's Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be sent to www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
