Roy R. Matthees age 75 of Zumbrota died on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at his home. Funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Reverend Wayne Schoch officiating. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Roy Rudolph Matthees was born on April 5, 1934 in Zumbrota Township, Goodhue County, MN to Frederick and Sabina (nee Stumpf) Matthees. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Roy drove milk truck for Forrest Olson. On October 23, 1954 he married Alyce Grose at First Lutheran Church in Kenyon by Pastor Rogness. They made their home in Zumbrota and Roy drove truck for Valley Limestone and worked at Tilly Oil for ten years. In 1966 he started Matthees Oil, which he operated for thirty years, retiring in 1996. Roy enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, woodworking, gardening, being with family and friends and attending grandchildren's activities.
Roy was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he served on different committees. Roy is survived by his wife, Alyce; children, Steve (Marcia) Matthees of Mazeppa, Bruce (Rita) Matthees of Zumbrota, Cindy (Dick) Sand of Zumbrota, Mark (Patricia) Matthees of Farmington, and Doug (Cindy) Matthees of Zumbrota; nineteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren ; sister, Ann Quast of Zumbrota and brother-in-law, Ronald (Lila) Grose of Kenyon.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Peter Sand and Christopher Matthees; one great granddaughter Madison Ziebell; brother, Donald Matthees and sisters, Berdell Hernlem and Lois Raasch. Casketbearers are grandchildren, Jace, Kory, Brad, Cole and Michelle Matthees and Ryan Gunhus. Honorary bearers are grandchildren, Shane, Terin, Luke, and Adam Matthees, Libby Carlson, Pat Sand, Jo Lynn, Lee, and Brady Oeltjenbruns, Elyse Baker, Breanna and Brittany Gadient.
