Roger Schultz passed away peacefully at home on September 29, 2019, in Zumbrota, MN, at the age of 92. He was born October 19, 1926, in Montello, WI, the son of Ernest and Edith Schultz. He attended St. John's Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Montello High School in 1944. After high school he was briefly employed with Freitag's IGA store and the Marquette County Highway Department before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1946. He served at various air bases in Texas, Illinois, and Florida before being honorably discharged in 1947.
Upon his return home, Roger took a clerical position with Montello Products Company, where he worked for 42 years until he retired as Vice President of Personnel and Purchasing in 1988. Roger had the "gift of gab," so he was the perfect guy to communicate with employees and the steel and wire salesmen who came through his office. In addition to his full-time job, he owned and operated the Kozy Rest Motel from 1955 to 1972, first with a business partner and later with his wife, Ardyce.
Roger and Ardyce were married in 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet, Minnesota, and together they raised 5 children. They enjoyed many family vacations, including an annual vacation at a cottage on Wood Lake, WI, a fond memory for his children and grandchildren to this day.
Roger was very involved in his community and church, serving on numerous boards and committees over the years. He enjoyed big band music and dancing, downhill skiing, fishing, and canoeing on rivers and lakes in the Montello area. However, he discovered his true loves in retirement: golfing and traveling with his wife and their travel trailer. They visited much of the United States including Hawaii, and for many years spent their winters in Arizona and later Okeechobee, FL. Roger lived nearly his entire life in Montello, only just moving to Zumbrota, Minnesota in 2015.
Roger is survived by Ardyce, his wife of 66 years; sons Larry (Alice) Schultz of Bellevue, WA, Daniel (Susan) Schultz of Centennial, CO; daughters Debra Schultz of Zumbrota, MN, Sally (David) Jackson of Fond du Lac, WI, Mary (Garry) Ring of Zumbrota, MN; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Hortense, and son-in-law Thomas McBryde.
The funeral service will be at 1:00PM, Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Princeton, WI, at a later date. If so desired, memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church in Montello or Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota.
